First the strategy, then the best possible structure and the most suitable processes. This principle should be followed because:
How can the best organizational form be found as long as the company’s business areas are not strategically confirmed or realigned? A company that is primarily organized according to products needs a different structure than one that is primarily organized according to customer logic. The business area structure drives the organization. Only when the division of the company into business areas is clear can the best possible organizational structure be determined.
To explain, an example:
How should the processes of a printing company be optimized as long as the strategy is unclear, which states that the printing company’s special core competency should be speed? It is clear that only after defining this unique core competency of wanting to be the fastest printing company, the best possible processes can be designed and all processes must be trimmed to “speed world championships”. A process logic that would have to be based on a core competency of “solution competence” would certainly lead to a completely different process design.
