Concentrate on profitable or strategically important businesses:
If you have strong and profitable businesses, you should focus on them. In practice, the opposite happens: businesses that are doing well are ‘left alone’. Energy is channelled into those businesses that are not profitable; the aim is to get them up and running too.
If these are innovations and start-ups, then this is justified. But if they are poorly positioned, perennially loss-making businesses, then something is going wrong. The misallocation of resources leads to a deterioration of the core business and to endless and usually unsuccessful efforts to deal with loss-making businesses.
