Successful family businesses

Well-managed SMEs and medium-sized companies are sustainably successful. They are the backbone of our economy. Their owners, managing directors and managers are the true representatives of entrepreneurship and pioneering spirit, coupled with close proximity to customers and employees.

However, this does not mean that the managers of the many successful SMEs and mid-sized companies can ignore the current state of management knowledge. New insights into company and employee management are highly relevant. Knowledge about correct and good management must also be utilised in SMEs in particular.

This is exactly what we aim to achieve with our SME and mid-market programmes: Profound analyses, correct assessment of the situation, creative solutions, effective management.

‘Small, customer-centred and lean companies are the really big ones: Well-managed SMEs and mid-sized companies have the potential to be far superior to large corporations in many respects. However, being small and flexible is not enough to achieve sustainable success. Small companies can make mistakes that can quickly lead to them leaving the market. What’s more, there are businesses that are ideal for SMEs and mid-sized companies. But there are also businesses for which you have to be big and keep getting bigger.

Our recommendation:
Take advantage of St. Gallen Business School’s expertise and attend our management seminars and programmes.’

The SME curriculum

‘Educate yourself further. In two years‘ time, we’ll need you as our new sales manager,’ my boss said to me the other day. That makes me very happy and gives me time to prepare for one of the most important tasks in our SME. As Head of Sales, I will be part of the management team.

St. Gallen Business School offers the right programmes for this. As an SME, we don’t need lofty theories. We need knowledge that can be utilised immediately, knowledge that is geared precisely to the skills that I will need in the future.

We discussed this in detail with my study supervisor at the SGBS, which resulted in the SME learning plan: On a timeline spanning 3 years, my training and further education path was worked out together. I now start with 2 seminars per year. Between the seminars, I receive tasks, St. Gallen tools to work on and online coaching as ongoing learning support.

Later, I can then upgrade to the Certified Expert of the SGBS, all previous achievements will be recognised. Maybe I’ll also do the upgrade to Executive MBAand a further year part-time at St. Gallen Business School and SRH Berlin*or the Gold Award-winning Master in International Management.

Focus on SMEs and mid-sized companies

The Centre for Family Businesses at St.Gallen Business School has the task of accompanying and supporting SMEs and mid-sized companies on their path to success. Under the direction of Prof Dr Claus Gerberich and Dipl.-Kfm. Helmut Bähr, we examine the latest management findings from the perspective of SMEs. Our aim is to enable entrepreneurs, managing directors and top performers from SMEs and mid-sized companies to recognise the major strengths of family businesses and to make targeted use of them.

Specialized seminars

Family businesses, SMEs and mid-sized companies need management training and further education that focuses on their natural strengths:

  • The long-term, sustainable perspective. The owners think in terms of generations, not quarters
  • A strong corporate culture with established values that leads to a high level of emotional loyalty among employees
  • High commitment to outstanding quality
  • Personal proximity to customers and markets
  • Courage to innovate
  • Flexibility and speed of decisions

These strengths must be cultivated, but also used as a competitive advantage.

Knowledge with a special effect: Letter to our lecturers

Apply what you have learned

Management seminars and management programs are a not inconsiderable investment that must pay off. This is why medium-sized companies in particular attach great importance to the practical benefits of management training.

In the final part of the program, you will receive an in-depth look at those topics that are particularly important to you. Plus specific tips for your own company. Seminars with this symbol have an important practical benefit: As a participant, you have the opportunity to write an e-mail letter to our lecturers on a topic that is of particular interest to you. Our lecturers prepare themselves. You can introduce the topic during the last part of the program and thus receive valuable impulses for your practice.
